The benefits of water cooled chillers

Water cooled chillers operate by exchanging heat and dispersing it to the outside ambient environment by way of a vapour compression cycle. The goal is to maintain a desired temperature inside a building. All buildings require some form of air-conditioning. There are various sources of the heat build-up in modern buildings. Heat builds up internally due to equipment, even computers and printers. Causal heat sources also include the people and even the lights in the building. From outside, the main source of heat is solar. The building’s construction material, like windows and walls, contribute to the temperature inside.

Water-cooled systems are ideal in larger buildings thanks to the relatively low cost and their reach being limited only by as far as the piping used. They’re a closed system, meaning the outside atmosphere doesn’t affect the temperature. This means fewer chemicals are used and the system is subject to less contamination and corrosion.

Water systems can be even more environmentally friendly. All they require is additional absorption chillers and you could cool a large building using natural gas, fuel oil or even waste heat from inside the building to create steam or hot water.

With that said, a water chiller still requires a refrigerant. We use the new global standard, eco-friendly refrigerant, R-410A. Although it requires specialised training and tools to deal with the increase in gas pressure, the payoff is non-ozone depletion and better efficiency.
